The Strength of Support: How Relationships Fuel Entrepreneurial Success

In the world of entrepreneurship, success is rarely a solo endeavor. Behind every thriving business is a network of supporters who play a crucial role in the journey. Brian and Mary Jo Sullivan understand the importance of having a strong support system, as they navigate the challenges of building their business.

Supporting Players

No successful business is sustained without people behind the scenes supporting the efforts. Think about when you bring a newborn child home and the support the caregivers need to survive the first few weeks and months. Friends and neighbors bring meals so the physically exhausted new parents can nourish their bodies.

Family members come to visit and allow the parents to attempt to get a few hours of much-needed sleep. The support of people around the new parents is paramount to feeling “successful” in the early days. As with the early days with a newborn, no great business venture can be accomplished without the support of the people behind the scenes. I was fortunate to not only have my parents’ blessing but, maybe more importantly, Mary Jo’s.

A few months after starting the business, I was stressed and focused on my own workload, struggles, etc., but I took the opportunity to attend a networking event. There, I struck up a conversation with an engineer who was near the end of his career. He had many typical questions about the business and my family, but he seemed most curious about Mary Jo’s support.

After chatting for five minutes or so, he said, “You’re so lucky that your wife is supportive of your dream.” I smiled because it was something I was subconsciously grateful for. The man’s expression darkened as he continued. “I always wanted to start my own firm,” he admitted, “but my wife wouldn’t let me. I’ve always resented her because of that.” Wow! His words silenced the sounds in the crowded, noisy bar and hit me profoundly. He was right; I was incredibly fortunate to have a supportive spouse. At that point, though, I had no idea how fortunate I was.

As Brian and Mary Jo reflect on their journey, they recognize that success is not just about personal ambition but also about the connections and support that allow them to thrive. Their story is a testament to the importance of nurturing relationships and acknowledging the people who stand by you in pursuit of your dreams.
