“I’ve always seen the benefit of having a solid network and peers to bounce ideas off of. However, when I started my business, my network of peers and fellow business owners was not as strong as I needed it to be. So, I decided to join a local networking group in my hometown, which was a nice, friendly group of people; however, they weren’t connected to my target clients. Most of the group serviced my hometown in New Jersey while I was attempting to service New York City.

One of the huge benefits of the group, though, was the friendly nature that allowed me to get more comfortable with the concept of networking. I was able to continue to practice honing my introduction and my elevator pitch to a group of qualified professionals. I didn’t land any new leads from the group, but I benefited tremendously from the practice of networking.

A friend of mine recently asked about the benefits of the networking groups I joined when I started the business. Essentially, I said, ‘Don’t be too picky. If you find a group that isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, go anyway, get your reps in; it’s great practice.’ Of course, we want to be in groups that allow us to benefit from their network and, similarly, allow the people in the group to benefit from our network. However, it does take a little practice to get to that point of being mutually beneficial. You want to be well prepared, so when you have the opportunity to be in a room or even invited to join a group, the interaction is as powerful and natural as you want it to be.”

Brian and Mary Jo’s experience emphasizes the importance of consistency and practice when it comes to networking. While you may not immediately land leads, every interaction helps you refine your skills and increase your comfort level for future opportunities. Networking isn’t just about the right connections, but also about being prepared and open to practicing in different environments.
